Economics<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Catholic social teaching informs us that good governments and good economic systems <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">find ways of fostering the three principles<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">.\u00a0The Catholic Church also points out that <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">systems that do not value these three principles <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">work towards the detriment of mankind. Vincent Cardinal Nichols, then Archbishop of Westminster, explained it well when he said that it \u201cis not an economic or political programme, but it offers a powerful way of thinking about what the common good requires, and how structures in society can promote or undermine human well-being and the requirements of justice.\u201d <\/span><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theosthinktank.co.uk\/cmsfiles\/archive\/files\/Reports\/Just%20money%20combined%20FINAL%20FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>(Just Money: How Catholic Social Teaching Can Redeem Capitalism, Foreward)<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_module et_d4_element et_pb_toggle et_pb_toggle_0 hover-btn-border read-more bullets-module et_pb_toggle_item  et_pb_toggle_close\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">Read more<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content clearfix\"><p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, the Catholic Church has done a lot of thinking and reflection on these macro issues facing modern societies:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What form of government and economic system is best for promoting human freedom?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why must faith be part of the public square?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the pathologies destroying our culture, and how do we fix them?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How should we address the issues of developing countries?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the dangers of a \u201cwelfare state\u201d?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Provenance of the Holy Fathers<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Benedict XVI confirmed this when he said i<\/span>t \u201cis an expression of the prophetic task of the supreme pontiffs to give apostolic guidance to the church of Christ and to discern the new demands of evangelization.\u201d<sup>\u00a0<\/sup><a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/caritas-in-veritate\/#12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>(Caritas in Veritate, 12)<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Catholic Social Doctrine<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Catholic social teaching is so important and comprehensive that Pope Saint John Paul II called on lay Catholic leaders to form their consciences on the tenets of the Church\u2019s social doctrine. <em><a class=\"alternate-link\" style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_exh_22011999_ecclesia-in-america.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Ecclesia in America, 67)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Pope Pius XI believed the principles of Catholic social teaching to be universal. He stated that even those that do not share the faith, may share in its social doctrine.\u00a0Catholic social teaching\u00a0 has \u201cgradually and imperceptibly worked its way into the minds of those outside Catholic unity who do not recognize the authority of the Church. Catholic principles on the social question have as a result, passed little by little into the patrimony of all human society.\u201d <em><a class=\"alternate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/capp-usa.org\/quadragesimo-anno\/#21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Quadragesimo Anno, 21)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Call To Action<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Yet, most Catholics are largely unaware of Catholic social doctrine. Even if we attend Mass regularly, go, or went, to Catholic schools and are active in our parishes we know little of this teaching.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_d4_element et_pb_section et_pb_section_5 mosaic_width et_animated  et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode et_section_regular et_block_section\" >\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_d4_element et_pb_row et_pb_row_5 et_animated  et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode et_block_row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_d4_element et_pb_column_3_5 et_pb_column et_pb_column_6  et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode et_block_column\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_module et_d4_element et_pb_text et_pb_text_8  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h4>The Principle of Human Dignity<\/h4><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_module et_d4_element et_pb_text et_pb_text_9  et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>Pope St. John Paul II said, \"[T]he guiding principle...of all of the Church\u2019s social doctrine, is a \u200b<strong>correct view of the human person <\/strong>\u200band of his unique value, inasmuch as 'man ... is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself'. God has imprinted his own image and likeness on man (cf. Gen 1:26), conferring upon him an incomparable dignity, as the Church frequently insists... Only in marrying these principles can either be realized.\u00a0The <strong>principles<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>Solidarity and Subsidiarity<\/strong>, resulting from over a century of magisterial reflection in major encyclicals on politics, economics and culture, are occasionally presented as independent of each other or even, at times, in conflict.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, these foundational principles of Catholic social teaching <strong>are both offspring of the prime principle<\/strong>, <strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>. Both are born in and are expressions of Human Dignity, and both are absolutely central to\u00a0Catholic social teaching.<\/p>\n<p>The case for Solidarity deriving from Human Dignity may appear easier to grasp than that for Subsidiarity. In fact, Subsidiarity does flow from Human Dignity: \"undoubtedly the principle of subsidiarity [is] an expression of inalienable human freedom.
