Pope Benedict's Caritas in Veritate is seminal<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We complete our summary of Caritas in Veritate<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by calling out another new contribution. Pope Benedict XVI \"completes\" Pope St. John Paul II\u2019s introduction of life issues to social teaching (in Centesimus Annus<\/a><\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Issues of life had been somewhat quarantined from Catholic social teaching and were considered a separate branch of moral theology.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The implications for their integration into CST in <\/span>Centesimus Annus <\/span><\/i>were potentially huge but were not entirely sorted. This has now been 'corrected'.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

YOU CANNOT SEPARATE LIFE FROM SOCIAL JUSTICE<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

In Caritas in Veritate<\/i> the Church makes clear that there can be no separation of issues of life and social justice<\/strong>: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"[R]espect for life\u2026cannot in any way be detached from questions concerning the development of peoples\u2026Openness to life is at the center of true development<\/strong>. When a society moves toward the denial or suppression of life, it ends up no longer finding the necessary motivation and energy to strive for man\u2019s true good.\" (CIV, 28)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"The social question has become a radical anthropological question<\/strong>.\" (CIV, 75)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is one of Pope Benedict XVI's unique contributions to Catholic social teaching - pointing out that a primary task of working for social justice includes promoting a culture of life<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Pope Benedict XVI is trying to inspire and ignite lay Catholics to develop their consciences<\/strong> on the tenets of Catholic social teaching, embrace the concept of integral development and realize that our efforts in this area are a binding and forceful requirement of our lay vocation:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Development needs Christians with their arms raised toward God in<\/strong><\/i> prayer<\/strong>\". (CIV, 79)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CARITAS IN VERITATE SUMMARY<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

In Caritas in Veritate Pope Benedict XVI confirms the details of Catholic social teaching while \u2018moving\u2019 it to a different level<\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He continues a \u2018new stream\u2019 of the Church\u2019s social teaching; one began by Pope St. Paul VI with Populorum Progressio<\/a><\/span>,<\/i> followed 20 years later by Pope St. John Paul\u2019s Sollicitudo rei Socialis<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and commemorated again by his CIV.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He states, \u201cI intend to pay tribute and to honor the memory of the great Pope Paul VI, revisiting his teachings on integral human development<\/strong> and taking my place within the path that they marked out so as to apply them to the present moment.\u201d (CIV, 8)<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Populorum Progressio deserves to be considered 'the Rerum Novarum of the present age', shedding light upon humanity\u2019s journey toward unity.\" (CIV, 8)<\/a><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CARITAS IN VERITATE THEMES<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n
