To answer whether Jesus was a socialist we need to first define socialism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Classic Socialism<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n


Classic socialism, usually associated with Karl Marx, is the transitional economic system between capitalism and communism. Its aim is state ownership<\/strong> of the<\/strong> means of production <\/strong>\u2014 with people then sharing equally in the outputs of the system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Catholic Church Condemns Socialism<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n


At the height of extreme Capitalism caused injustices of the Industrial Revolution, Pope Leo XIII made the Church\u2019s response to Marx\u2019s theories for a \u2018better\u2019 economy abundantly clear:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Socialism <\/strong>is \u201cemphatically unjust\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0for it \u201cwould rob the lawful possessor, distort the functions of the State, and create utter confusion in the community.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 4)<\/a><\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n

Socialism \u201cmust be utterly rejected<\/strong>, since it only injures those whom it would seem meant to benefit, is directly contrary to the natural rights of mankind, and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonweal.\u201d\u00a0(Rerum Novarum, 24)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

One hundred years later, Pope St. John Paul II, all too familiar with socialist and communist regimes, stated that under socialism, freedom \u201cis replaced by a burdensome system of bureaucratic control which dries up the wellsprings of initiative and creativity\u201d. (Centesimus Annus, 25)<\/em><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Basically, socialism will never work because \u201cIt is not possible to understand man on the basis of economics alone\u201d. (Centesimus Annus, 24)<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

So, Jesus was NOT a socialist!<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Even moderate socialism \u201cis based\u2026on a theory of human society\u2026 irreconcilable\u00a0with true Christianity.\u201d\u00a0(Pope Pius XI, 120)<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Democratic Socialism<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n


What about a Christian socialism? Was Jesus a social democrat? A Christian socialist? Surely, that approach takes in the \u2018best of both worlds\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
