What is Social Justice?<\/span><\/h2>\n


Social justice is what results<\/strong> when \u201cassociations or individuals<\/strong>\u2026obtain what is their due<\/strong>, according to their nature and their vocation.\u201d (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1928)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Social Justice Warrior Requirements<\/span><\/h2>\n


A social justice warrior practices\u00a0all the tenets of Catholic social teaching<\/strong> to achieve the common good \u2013 which is social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n

We recognize:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \"Justice toward men disposes one to respect\u00a0the\u00a0rights\u00a0of each\".\u00a0(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1807)<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Social justice\u2019s purpose is to \"establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity\". (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1807)<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Social justice warriors \"love God\u00a0above all things for his own sake,\u00a0and our neighbor as ourselves\".\u00a0(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1822)<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The \"SJW\" knows that \"Justice is the primary way of charity\" while \"on the other hand, charity transcends justice and completes it.\"\u00a0(Caritas in Veritate, 60)<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n
  5. We know justice is binding\u00a0\u2013 a \u201crequirement\u201d of lay spirituality. \u201cEvery Christian is called to practice this charity\u201d.\u00a0(Caritas in Veritate, 7)<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Catholic Social Teaching Informs the Social Justice Warrior<\/span><\/h2>\n


    It was Pope Benedict XVI who emphasized that to practice Catholic social teaching is<\/span> charity. <\/em><\/strong>\u201c\u2018Caritas in Veritate\u2019 is the principle around which the church\u2019s social doctrine turns\u201d.     (Caritas in Veritate, 6)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

    The practice of Catholic social teaching \u201cis the institutional path \u2014 we might also call it the political path \u2014 of charity,\u00a0no less excellent and effective than the kind of charity which encounters the neighbor directly, outside the institutional mediation of the polis.\u201d (Caritas in Veritate, 7)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

    The True Social Justice Warrior<\/span><\/h2>\n


    <\/span>\u201cTrue social justice<\/strong>\u2026can\u00a0only\u00a0be\u00a0possible\u00a0in a perspective of\u00a0genuine solidarity<\/strong>\u00a0that commits people to live and work always for others.\u201d\u00a0    (Pope Benedict XVI, Address to CAPP Members)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

    The true fight for social justice is NOT a focus on perceived \u201crights\u201d such as abortion, transgenderism, or universal health care. It does not contradict Church teaching on the rights of children, parents, or the limitations of the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Absent this understanding, \"We may become a charitable NGO, but not the Church\".\u00a0(Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

    Three Key Principles<\/a><\/h2>

    Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles -\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Good governments and good economic systems find ways of fostering the three principles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Human Dignity<\/a><\/h2>

    This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Solidarity<\/a><\/h2>

    Solidarity is not \u201ca feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of others. It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good\u201d. (Pope St. John Paul II, 38)<\/a> Love of God and love of neighbor are, in fact, linked and form one, single commandment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Subsidiarity<\/a><\/h2>

    Subsidiarity \u201cis a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry. So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies\u201d.
