What is Reverse Racism?<\/span><\/h1>\n

Reverse racism, sometimes referred to as reverse discrimination, is \u201cprejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a dominant or privileged racial or ethnic group.\u201d (Oxford Languages)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

It often entails racist attitudes and behaviors of a minority group toward a majority group that historically was racist toward the minority.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reverse racism is not the way to handle the injustice of racism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Catholic Church and Racism<\/span><\/h2>\n


\u201cRacism is a sin<\/strong>\u00a0that constitutes a serious offence against God.\u201d\u00a0(Pope St. John Paul II)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Church\u2019s doctrine affirms\u2026all racist theories are contrary to Christian faith <\/strong>and love\u2026Racism and racist acts must be condemned.\u201d (The Church and Racism, 33)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

No matter who the racism is directed at, \"It is therefore\u00a0inconceivable for those who accept the Gospel message\u2026to deny fundamental human equality in the name of the alleged superiority of a race or ethnic group\". (Pope St. Paul VI)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Whoever exalts race<\/strong>\u2026distorts and perverts<\/strong> an order of the world planned and created by God\". (Pope Pius XI, 8)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Racism is Racism!<\/span><\/h2>\n


The Church\u00a0cautions all victims of racism to avoid \"falling into a racism similar to that which they are rejecting<\/strong>.\" (The Church and Racism, 27)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Reverse Discrimination is Not an Answer<\/span><\/h2>\n


<\/span>\"The Church r<\/strong>eproves, as foreign to the mind of Christ, any discrimination.\" (Pope St. Paul VI, 5)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAll forms of discrimination must be firmly opposed<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0(The Church and Racism, 33)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lifting one race above the other in any private or public place, institution, opportunity, or any part of society is to be condemned.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What Can We Do About Racism?<\/span><\/h2>\n


\u201cThe\u00a0victims\u00a0of racism<\/strong>, wherever they may be,\u00a0must be defended<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0(The Church and Racism, 26)<\/a> We must recognize the human dignity of all people. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[I]t is important to educate to a positive appreciation of the complementary diversity of peoples\u201d. (The Church and Racism, 33)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRespect for every person<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0every race\u00a0is respect for basic rights, dignity and fundamental equality\u201d.\u00a0(The Church and Racism, 33)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Three Key Principles<\/a><\/h2>

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles -\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Good governments and good economic systems find ways of fostering the three principles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Human Dignity<\/a><\/h2>

Solidarity<\/a><\/h2>

Solidarity is not \u201ca feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of others. It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good\u201d. (Pope St. John Paul II, 38)<\/a> Love of God and love of neighbor are, in fact, linked and form one, single commandment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Subsidiarity<\/a><\/h2>

Subsidiarity \u201cis a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry. So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies\u201d.
