What is culture? It is the most important structure of society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Definition of Culture<\/span><\/h2>\n


<\/span>Culture is<\/strong> the shared<\/strong> values, beliefs, customs, behaviors, and practices of a group of people.<\/span><\/p>\n

It encompasses a wide range of aspects, including language, religion, traditions, art, food, music, social norms, what is right and wrong, and even ways of perceiving the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Culture is passed down<\/strong> from generation to generation and shapes how individuals in a society think, communicate, and interact with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Preeminence of Culture<\/span><\/h2>\n


<\/span>Culture<\/a> is the most important structure<\/strong> of society<\/strong> because \u201cMan is understood in a more complete way when he is situated within the sphere of culture through his language, history, and the position he takes towards the fundamental events of life, such as birth, love, work and death.\" (Pope St. John Paul II, 24)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Pope St. John Paul II established the need to maintain vibrant and critical interaction among economics<\/a>, culture, and\u00a0politics<\/a>, emphasizing that of these \u2013 culture is the most important: \u201cAll human activity takes place within a culture and interacts with culture.\u201d (Pope St. John Paul II, 51)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[P]olitics and economy cannot be reduced to mere technical know-how bereft of ideals and unconcerned with the transcendent dimension of man\u2026\u201d (Pope Francis, 10)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Our Culture is in Crisis!<\/span><\/h2>\n


Contemporary culture is in crisis<\/strong> because of a drift from faith, the erosion of traditional moral values, and a growing disregard for human dignity. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our problems have their roots in culture and are manifested in economic, political, and societal pathologies such as consumerism<\/a>, our human and physical environment\u00a0(ecology)<\/a>, alienation<\/a>, and radical secularism\/relativism.
<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, these represent a spiritual and moral crisis that affects the core of human existence. They originate \u201cin the denial of the primacy of the human person! We have created new idols<\/strong>.\u201d (Pope Francis, 55)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

What is Culture without God?<\/span><\/h2>\n


<\/span>At \"the heart of every culture lies the attitude man takes to the greatest mystery: the mystery of God.\" (Pope St. John Paul II, 24)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe apex of development is the exercise of the right and duty to seek God, to know him and to live in accordance with that knowledge.\u201d (Pope St. John Paul II, 29)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of culture is to orient peoples toward God<\/strong> because without God, \u201cpublic life is sapped of its motivation and politics takes on a domineering and aggressive character. Human rights risk being ignored\u201d. (Pope Benedict XVI, 56)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Religion is at the heart of culture<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Without religion society creates an illusion that God does not exist or can be restricted to the realm of purely private affairs and the greatest danger is \u201chuman beings are themselves considered consumer goods to be used and then discarded.\u201d (Pope Francis, 53)\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The Solution<\/span><\/h2>\n


<\/span>\u201cFreedom\u2026demands <\/strong>the courage<\/strong> to engage in civic life and to bring one\u2019s deepest beliefs and values to reasoned public debate.\u201d (Pope Benedict XVI)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

If we fail to restore God\u2019s preeminence, \u201ccultures can no longer define themselves within a nature that transcends them, and man ends up being reduced to a cultural statistic. When this happens, humanity runs new risks of enslavement and manipulation.\u201d (Pope Benedict XVI, 26)<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[A]uthentic human development concerns the whole of the person in every single dimension\u201d (Pope Benedict XVI, 11)<\/a> and <\/span>Catholic social teaching, with its unwavering principles of\u00a0human dignity<\/a>, solidarity<\/a>, and subsidiarity<\/a>, holds the answer! Three Key Principles<\/a><\/h2>

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles -\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Good governments and good economic systems find ways of fostering the three principles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Human Dignity<\/a><\/h2>

This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Solidarity<\/a><\/h2>

Solidarity is not \u201ca feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of others. It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good\u201d. (Pope St. John Paul II, 38)<\/a> Love of God and love of neighbor are, in fact, linked and form one, single commandment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Subsidiarity<\/a><\/h2>

Subsidiarity \u201cis a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry. So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies\u201d.
