Subsidiarity<\/a><\/span> is one of the three<\/strong>, key principles of Catholic Social Teaching<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Subsidiarity<\/p>\n

Subsidiarity is one of three Catholic social teaching principles, and encourages personal responsibility and decisions made at the lowest level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It emanates from the prime principle of Human Dignity<\/a> insisting decisions in society <\/strong>be taken at the lowest competent level<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why? Because problems are best solved at the level where they arise or, if this is not possible, at the lowest \u200bcompetent\u200b level.<\/span><\/p>\n

Any activity that can be efficaciously performed by a more decentralized entity \u2013 should be.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is Subsidiarity Important?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Subsidiarity is A Principle of Human Flourishing<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n


Subsidiarity is not just about efficiency. It prioritizes human fulfillment through personal freedom and responsibility<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It stresses the importance of individuals acting through their own deliberations, choices, and efforts, rather than relying on others to act on their behalf.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Subsidiarity also acknowledges the foundational role of families, communities, and associations<\/strong> \u2013 all of which precede the state. It is these groups which provide the conditions necessary for individuals to achieve their potential.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsidiarity is A Principle of Limited Government<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n


Subsidiarity supports the common good<\/a> and embraces pluralism \u2013 a key element of democracy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It ensures the state does not impose. Rather it creates an environment where individuals can freely choose actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsidiarity ensures diverse paths are pursued by enabling decision-makers to negotiate solutions that contribute to the common good of the entire society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsidiarity Guards Against Tyranny<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n


Pope Francis reminds us that \"No actual or established power has the right to deprive peoples of the full exercise of their sovereignty.\" (Pope Francis, 3.2)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What individuals or smaller groups can handle independently should not be transferred to larger entities. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a fundamental principle of social philosophy, fixed and unchangeable, that one should not withdraw from individuals and commit to the community what they can accomplish by their own enterprise and industry. So, too, it is an injustice and at the same time a\u200b \u200bgrave evil and a disturbance of right order to transfer to the larger and higher collectivity functions which can be performed and provided for by the lesser and subordinate bodies\u201d. (Pope Pius XI, 79)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Subsidiarity Serves as a Justification for the State<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n


By recognizing \u200bsubsidiarity the state is, itself, justified: i.e., \u201cwill more freely, powerfully, and effectively do all those things that belong to it alone because it alone can do them\u201d. (Pope Pius XI, 80)<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The state must support civil society\u2019s efforts to foster moral choices freely. Such an approach balances respect for human liberty with the need to encourage the actions of families and intermediate associations.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, subsidiarity serves as both a justification for the state and a limitation on its powers. It affirms the state\u2019s role in addressing what only it can accomplish and prevents it from overstepping its bounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the State<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n


While acknowledging the state\u2019s value, CST cautions against idolizing the 'State' as humanity\u2019s ultimate horizon.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Catholic Social Teaching recognizes the instrumental nature of political authority and the limits of the state in addressing humanity\u2019s ultimate purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsidiarity thus ensures state institutions contribute to the moral\/cultural fabric of society, while avoiding coercion in shaping virtues.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Individuals and groups have the right to go their own way, even though they may sometimes make mistakes. In full respect for that freedom, civil society is called to help each person and social organization to take up its specific role and thus contribute to the common good.\" (Pope Francis)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Bottom Line<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Three Key Principles<\/a><\/h2>

Catholic social teaching is built on three foundational principles -\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity<\/strong>,\u00a0Solidarity\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Subsidiarity.\u00a0<\/strong>Human Dignity, embodied in a correct understanding of the human person, is the greatest. The others flow from it. Good governments and good economic systems find ways of fostering the three principles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Human Dignity<\/a><\/h2>

This means a correct understanding of the human person and of each person\u2019s unique value. All Catholic social teaching flows from this: the inherent dignity of every person that comes from being made in God\u2019s image.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Solidarity<\/a><\/h2>

Solidarity is not \u201ca feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of others. It is a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good\u201d. (Pope St. John Paul II, 38)<\/a> Love of God and love of neighbor are, in fact, linked and form one, single commandment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
